I was born in a farmhouse Northeast of Clarksville and went to a country school a couple of miles away. When I was in third grade, we moved to a farm outside of Sumner near Buck Creek. I also went to a country school there. I hated the move and didn’t like school there very much. I’ve never been able to sing and since it was a one room school, I would pretend to be sick on music day so I wouldn’t have to sing in front of everyone. I remember once the teacher took me home and Dad sent me back. Darn, that didn’t work. There was a creek nearby where we would wade and catch minnows. After living there for one year the landowner directly across the road where we lived northeast of Clarksville asked Dad to rent his ground and we moved back. I was happy to be back but by then they were closing the county schools and I had to ride the bus almost an hour each day to get to school. Back then everyone rode the bus because very few kids had cars. I enjoyed all the crazy things happening on the bus. Also, there were always a few bullies that had to make fun of us country hicks. One of them I still don’t like to this day. I met my good friends Kay Cagley, Betty Miller, and Shirley Leerhoff so I enjoyed Clarksville school.
