Our favorite trip, of course, was our trip to Europe but we have always loved traveling anywhere. I’m so thankful that Bob loves to travel too. We have friends that one likes to travel and the other doesn’t. That would be upsetting! The Packard Elevator where Bob bought all of his feeds for the animals gave a percent into a travel fund if you paid your bills on time. They planned trips for those of us in the group. This included our neighbors and friends so they were always fun trips. We went to the Bahamas and Las Vegas, etc. this way. When they decided to dissolve this perk we had quite a bit of money in the fund so we set out on a driving trip. We started by going to my sister Marva’s in Tulsa Oklahoma. Did some sightseeing there plus having a good visit with her and Glynn. From Marva’s we drove to New Mexico. We had a not so good night staying there. The room we could find was in a rather iffy neighborhood. Remember moving the dresser in front of the door for the night! The next morning we stopped at a grocery store where we ended up in line behind an old Indian man who was fighting mad because the clerk wouldn’t sell him alcohol with some sort of welfare coupons he had. Crazy thing to remember but I was afraid for the clerk. We then went on to Phoenix, Arizona where we stayed another night. Our next stop was in San Diego, California where we visited Bob’s Mom’s cousin Adeline Wedeking. Bill and Adeline had been to our home often when visiting Clarksville. Bill and his brother Frank spent summers with Bob’s grandparents on the farm where we lived. They seemed more like brothers to Edna than cousins. She made us very welcome and insisted we stay with her a couple of nights. She drove us around showing us the sights of San Diego. We ate at a restaurant on the pier, toured the zoo on a bus, etc. We enjoyed our days with her since she knew her city well. After leaving her we went to Old Town San Diego. Toured there and ate in a very nice restaurant where I had my first meal of a vegetable dish with alfredo. Still think of it as my best meal ever. I know, lots of calories. We then went on to visit our friends Merlin and Diane Heinselman also in San Diego. Merlin was in my grade in school and was a great guy. He was also in 4 H with Bob. He and Diane lived in Waterloo when we did and we got together with them often. Our plan was to stay with them one night but they asked us to stay another so they could take us into Mexico. We would have been too chicken to go into Mexico alone back then so, of course, we stayed. We walked across the border into Tijuana. It was quite shocking to see the way of life there. It was sad to see the little kids sitting around selling packs of gum and other junk or just plain begging. Can still hear them saying “Nickel Lady.” Didn’t have the heart to ignore them. We went to a bar called Tijuana Tillies. Wow, this was quite a place. Lots of sailors having way to much fun. Really enjoyed our day with old friends. After leaving San Diego we went to my niece Sandy’s in Las Vegas. She and her husband took us downtown on the strip at night. This is an interesting place at night too. The next day Sandy took us to Hoover Dam and out into the dessert. Enjoyed our visit with Sandy and her family. On our way home we stopped in Utah overnight. We saw the Morman Tabernacle. There was a mass wedding going on out in the fenced in yard at the Tabernacle. We just looked at sights before heading back toward home. Our last night’s stay was in Kansas City, Missouri. We were gone for 17 days and had a great time seeing friends and family and having them show us around their areas.
