What was one of your favorite playground games?

Robert Fenneman

My favorite playground game in country school was softball. We also played Tag you’re it, Red Rover ,Annie Annie Over , Kick the Can and Captain May I. Rules for Annie Annie Over. It was played over the roof of the schoolhouse. You threw the ball over the roof and if someone on the other side caught it they could sneak around and try to tag you. If they tagged you then you were on their team so you tried to outrun them to stay on your own team If it didn’t go over you could yell pigtail and try again. They had to catch the ball before they could tag you. Rules for Red Rover Divide into 2 teams. Each team joins hands with line facing each. Taking turns they call one player over . He runs over trying to break the line. If he succeeds he can choose a player from this team to take back with him. Eventually one team will have all the players. Rules for Captain May I One person was captain. He would tell you something to do like take 2 giant steps or hop 3 times etc. You could only do these moves if you said “Captain May I.” Otherwise you had to go back. Kick the can was an early version of soccer, There were kids aged six to fourteen so we had to try to keep the sides even.
