What's the first major news story you can remember living through as a child?

The first major news story I can faintly remember is when World War II ended. I was only eight years old but in the back of my mind I can remember my Mother in the kitchen ironing when the announcement was made over the radio. My parents were very excited and happy to hear this. September 2, 1945
