Who did you go to prom with?

Back in the 50’s proms were nothing like they are today. The junior class would choose a theme and then order decoration. They would then have the fun of a couple nights at school preparing the gymnasium for the big event. My date for both of my proms was, of course, Joyce Frericks. I can’t really remember what the theme was for our Junior year but senior year it was Hawaiian. We always all had dinner together at the Lutheran Church basement before going to the dance at the gymnasium. Sophomores served the meal. The boys wore suits and ties and the girls wore formals. The music was done by a DJ. A dance popular at the time was the Bunny Hop. Everyone in one big line around the gymnasium. We would also dance mostly the two step. According to my memory book from prom I gave a speech entitled “Let a smile be your umbrella”. All of the speeches had song titles. I have no idea what I said. You all know I certainly didn’t sing it! Sorry no pictures. Our parents didn’t even see us together much less take pictures.
